4 Reasons to Take More Camping Trips This Fall

If you think the only time to camp is in the summer, you’re missing out. Autumn offers some of the best camping of any time of year, and this week, we’ll tell you why. Between the scenery, warm camping food, foggy mornings and cool nights, there are plenty of reasons to take a fall camping vacation. Read below, and let us know in the comments if you have any fall camping stories.

The Scenery –

Who doesn’t love gorgeous fall colors? While certain areas of the country are well-known for their autumn scenery (New England, for example), there are all kinds of fantastic views in the U.S. Check out Minnesota, South Dakota, Michigan, North Carolina, Colorado and/or Washington for other spectacular vistas.   Spearfish Canyon in the Black Hills is a less-travelled area that is breathtaking in the fall. While there, be sure to stop and see us at Rushmore Shadows Resort in Rapid City!

The Weather –

In most areas of the country, the best weather occurs in early fall. You escape the heat and humidity of deep summer and get long, restful nights of sleep in the cool autumn air. Hot drinks are glorious in the fall, and most of the bugs have left for warmer temperatures. As long as you’re prepared and bring the proper clothing and camping gear, fall weather is wonderful for camping.

Less Crowds –

With school going, everything is less crowded after Labor Day. Whether it’s the hiking trails, fishing holes, golf courses or campgrounds, there is a lot more open space. That isn’t to say everywhere will be completely sparse (in fact, fall camping has become a bit more popular in some areas), but you’re not going to run into the hustle and bustle of summer tourism.

Fall Activities –

Many campgrounds will have organized fall activities, but you can always strike out on your own. Apple picking, pumpkin searching and carving, harvest festivals, haunted houses. You name it, you can find a fun autumn activity in your area. Try a Minnesota fishing derby, or explore the haunted houses of Deadwood, South Dakota. And, don’t forget we are open for MEA Weekend and will be hosting activities at all of our MN locations. Member Appreciation Fall Festival is at St. Croix River Resort and you can call (800) 231-0425 TODAY to get your reservation! Don’t miss all the not so spooky fun!!

Cooking is also a fun family activity in the fall. Eat some awesome comfort food, or roast s’mores over the fire. There’s nothing like a warm, hearty meal on a cool autumn night. Try these quick recipes for some delicious comfort meals.

Like we’ve said, fall is an awesome time to camp. Even if it’s just a short weekend, it’ll be well worth your time to get out before the chill of winter hits. As always, give us a ring toll free at (800) 231-0425 and we’ll be happy to help plan your trip. Enjoy the autumn outdoors, and as always, happy exploring!
