Welcome to our fourth installment of our five-part series on the best vacation destinations in the U.S. Today we’ll take a trip to Midwest Outdoor Resorts’ Soo Line Trail Campground in Onamia, MN, minutes from world-renowned fishing in Lake Mille Lacs and an hour and a half north of the Twin Cities. Since we’re getting close to flip-flop weather, we’ll highlight some fun summertime activities around the resort.
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, the Soo Line Trail is your spot. Hiking, biking, and off-roading is all minutes away. You can also enjoy a beach day on Lake Mille Lacs or fish for trophy-size walleye, northern pike and bass. The area has plenty of dining and entertainment options as well, so you can plan an awesome adventure for everyone in your family. Let’s take a look at a few of the things to see and do on your summertime Soo Line Trail vacation:
Of course you can always fun day near the shore on Minnesota’s second-largest inland lake, but why not try exploring on a Jet Ski, boat, pontoon or canoe? You don’t necessarily need to haul your craft to enjoy a day on the calm waters of Lake Mille Lacs.
How about a trailride for a unique vacation memory? At Rolling Hills Arabian Farms, they offer guided farm tours while you and the family enjoy the company of horses, goats, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits and even a llama! You can also take kids 10 years and up on a trail ride, and they’ll get a lesson on how to properly ride a horse.
Offering educational programs, an observation tower and awesome hiking, Kathio State Park is a must-see on your Soo Line Trail vacation. Thirty-five miles of hiking trails wind throughout the park, and 9,000 years of human history and archeological significance make it a National Historic Landmark.
Highly rated on TripAdvisor, this museum is dedicated to telling the story of the Mille Lacs band of Ojibwe. There is also a restored 1930s trading post which has crafts workshops where kids can learn the arts of basket-weaving, crafting dream-catchers and even making their own maple syrup! The Trading Post has locally-made, handcrafted gifts, jewelry, books and music.
If the adults want to get away for a night, Grand Casino Mille Lacs is the spot. Offering plenty of entertainment year-round, Grand Casino Mille Lacs has entertainment from boxing to concerts to comedy. Of course there is gaming and excellent dining throughout the casino as well.
Known especially for walleye, Lake Mille Lacs covers more than 132,000 acres where fishing stories are made. Fishing guides are available year-round, as well as a plethora of bait shops in the area. Lake knowledge is key, so feel free to utilize the local’s expertise. You could also try a fishing launch, a 70-year old tradition complete with guided fishing trips and sunset cruises around the lake. A four-hour Mille Lacs fishing launch typically costs around $35-$40 per person, so it’s an affordable way to spend an afternoon making memories with the entire family.
There are plenty of sights to see around Lake Mille Lacs and the Soo Line Trail Campground. This is definitely an awesome destination for a summer vacation. The Soo Line Trail Campground offers free Wi-Fi to keep you connected on your trip, as well as beautiful RV sites, overnight suites and tent spots.
